What is this thing?

First of all, what is a food puzzle?

If the term Food Puzzle is new to you, it’s basically an object that holds food and requires your pet to figure out how to get the food. They might also be called puzzle feeders, interactive food dispensers, slow feeders or food toys. They provide tons of health benefits to your cat and there are a lot of different kinds of food puzzles out in the market. We’ve tried a few and you can scroll through our favorites by clicking into our Amazon store - Feeding Puzzles

Cat activity feeder as described by Trixie:

The TRIXIE Cat Activity Fun Board was specifically developed for clever and inquisitive cats. Give your cat a chance to show off her skills. Our interactive puzzle cat feeder challenges your kitty’s senses through five enrichment exercises. We have combined intelligent games with plenty of fun. Your cat will love the fish hunt and chase challenges and enjoy the well-earned tasty rewards. You control the level of difficulty therefore making this game perfect for all cats and activity levels. A booklet with tips and tricks is included for you.

Cat activity feeder described by me:

It’s the best food puzzle I’ve tried so far! It’s sturdy, good quality materials that your cat won’t chew/claw and destroy. It’s big enough for two or more cats to use at the same time. It has different difficulty levels to keep your cats entertained for a while. Plus, you could use it for both dry and wet treats/food.

I’ve used it just for dry treats because I have other puzzles specifically for their dry food. Also, the little cubes are designed for wet food or wet treats but I haven’t tried wet stuff on there yet because I’ve been busy/lazy and I don’t always clean it up right after they use it.

My cats absolutely love it. It’s cute how they quickly get used to things and associate this puzzle now with food. Every time I move it or grab it they expect me to give them treats. Kittens do get use to it fast, like anything. Adult cats that are used to just munch on a plate full of dry food or just have never had to work for treats might be caught off guard and have a hard time at first. If that happens, you can introduce the puzzle to them little by little, make it as easy as possible for them to get the treats at first. Even if the idea of having to work for their food is weird to them, be patient. The health benefits food puzzles provide is worth the wait.

I do have to say one it’s not enough for all my 7 cats but it does keep at least two or three, sometimes four of them entertained. All my kitties are on different difficulty levels and some of them just prefer to use it alone. So, sharing a food puzzle it’s really gonna be up to each cat. Feel free to share your experience in the comment section.

PROS:

  • Satisfies their predatory play behavior

  • Promotes both mental and physical stimulation/exercise

  • Slows down eating

  • Prevents regurgitating food or treats

  • Figths boredom by keeping them entertained/busy for longer

  • Reduces behavioral problems

Cons

  • If you use them for treats, you might accidentally give them too many treats. Specially when you have more than one cat. You might put enough treats for all your cats but one of your cats might eat it them faster than the others. Monitor them at first, if you use one puzzle for several cats, make sure they are all at the same difficulty level, you might need additional puzzles.

  • I can’t really think of any cons. Food puzzles have so many health benefits! Just watch out for other pets in the household, dogs might be able to get to the cat treats if left unattended.
